Alone in This Together
July 18 to August 16, 2020
Ampersand is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings and ceramic pieces by Mark Warren Jacques. The paintings were made in the isolation of quarantine, which, Mark notes, isn’t far from his normal practice. “I usually work in isolation, but this certainly felt different. With the whole world in a state of dizzying confusion and conflict, it was difficult to be inspired. However, over the years making art has always been therapy for my own personal sadnesses and stresses, so I painted forward. The vibe of the world outside was so confusing and really such a downer, so instead I looked inward for inspiration. I tried to paint things that would make me happy or calm or just reflections of quiet and aloneness. The lessons that slowing down can teach us. Strangely, this collective aloneness and isolation is what is bringing us together. We are Alone in this Together.”
Mark Warren Jacques lives and works in Leucadia, California. Over the past decade he has exhibited his paintings extensively in the U.S., with solo exhibitions in San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, New York and Boston, as well as internationally in Australia, Spain, Mexico and Canada. His work has been published in the art publications Juxtapoz, Tokion, Artbox, and Hi-Fructose. He has worked collaboratively with brands such as Nike, Herman Miller, Levis, Element Skateboards and Universal Records, and has many large scale public murals around the globe. This is his first exhibition with Ampersand.
