JORDAN SULLIVAN
Death Valley
March 18 to April 23, 2017
Ampersand is pleased to present Jordan Sullivan’s second exhibition at the gallery. Made during repeated visits to California’s Death Valley, the photographs further Sullivan’s interest in preserving the experience of time and space within landscape. As with his previous exhibition at Ampersand, a close collaboration between artist and gallery in the design of a small edition book was integral to the current show. Intentionally unbound, the viewing experience of Death Valley as book is meant to be interactive. The loose pages can be lifted or rearranged, creating diverse relationships between sky and mountain horizon. Eternal or ephemeral, the book can remain as is or the collector can pin its pages upon his or her wall. The gallery installation mirrors the book in its experimentation with scale and materiality. While also offered as traditional C-prints, here we present a series of Sullivan’s mountains as UV prints direct on small aluminum panels. The effect of an endless, common landscape is illusion; each horizon is as individual and nuanced as time itself.
Jordan Sullivan is a writer and artist splitting his time between New York City and Los Angeles, CA. His photographs, curatorial projects and prose have appeared in publications such as The Paris Review, The New York TimesMagazine, The New Yorker, Italian Vogue, Featureshoot, Dazed Digital, Dossier Journal, Twin Magazine, VICE, Domino, It's Nice That, Juxtapoz, Third Coast, GUP, Art + Design (China), Secret Behavior and ELLE. Among his many books are An Island in the Moon (Ampersand Editions, 2015 ) and Remaining Light (Silas Finch, 2016). Photographs from Death Valley were featured recently in a solo exhibition at Mama Gallery (Los Angeles).
