DAN GLUIBIZZI & ZEFREY THROWELL

There is no finish line

September 26 to October 21, 2012

We are pleased to welcome back Ampersand regular Dan Gluibizzi for a second exhibition at the gallery, this time in collaboration with New York artist, Zefrey Throwell. As with their previous two-man exhibition at By and By Gallery in Brooklyn titled I'll Tumblr 4 Ya (2010), the photographs and paintings in There is no finish line are invitingly erotic and directly engage the disorienting plethora of web-based imagery that defines much of our daily experience. The existence of a finish line not only predicts an end to something, it also implies an awareness of one's current position in space-time and, by extension, the meaning of one's relationship to culture, reality and society at large. There is no finish line is thus a title that aptly fits a body of work in which both artists, in differing ways, call into question one's ability to define his or her mental position in a world so charged and frenetic with shifting imagery. Whether it's a critique or a celebration is left to question. This uncertainty is further extended in Folding Space/Pressing Time, a limited edition book published by Ampersand to coincide with the exhibition. Similar to the show stylistically, the book is a stand-alone conceptual exploration in which Gluibizzi vibrantly distorts Tumblr Archive grids and Throwell gives photographic form to the erotic chaos that plagues his recurring dreams of time travel.

Gluibizzi's solo exhibition in 2011 at Ampersand titled Our Time was followed by participation in several group exhibitions in Portland, including Compound Gallery, TEDxPortland and Froelick Gallery. His art was featured on the cover of The Portland Mercury during the first week of June, 2012 and recent press includes a 2011 interview with Evanice Holz of Eye See Hue. An MFA graduate of the University of Cincinnati, Gluibizzi lives and works in Portland, OR. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States.

Zefrey Throwell is a self-described troublemaker living and working in New York City. Investigating honest communication, in all its varied plumage, is his aim. Working with video, radio, painting and performance, he is exploring the connecting points and underpinnings of social discourse. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at the Leopold Hoesch Museum in Germany, a solo evening at the Museum of Modern Art, performances at The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Guggenheim, as well as LAND in Los Angeles and Gasser Grunert Gallery in New York. Other recent performances and exhibitions were held in Belgium, Croatia, Paris and San Francisco. Throwell gained notoriety in August, 2011 for his performance piece Occularpation: Wall Street,, in which he and 50 performers appeared nude on Wall Street in New York and enacted actual Wall Street occupations. Similarly, I'll Raise You One was a seven-day public strip poker game using 5 different models of economics. First performed in November, 2011, a one day performance of I'll Raise You One was recently held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego. Throwell is a former resident of Portland and previous exhibitions in the Northwest include Elizabeth Leach Gallery (2003), Mark Wooley Gallery (2004), Littman Gallery (2005) and Disjecta.
